Is ecdysterone harmful? What are the side effects?

Ecdistilled has not been reported to have any side effects, making it completely safe.

  • Lack of masculinization
  • No conversion to extrogenic compounds
  • No hepatotoxicity
  • No high blood pressure
  • No reduction in testicles
  • No effect on the hormonal system of mammals, including humans
  • Incredibly low levels of toxicity

How are all these positive actions achieved without significant side effects? The secret is hidden in the preparation itself.

The only significant factor in accelerating muscle mass gain is the anabolic environment. The action of ecdysterone, among other positive effects, is aimed at creating an "ideal" environment for building muscles. This involves maintaining a positive nitrogen balance and increasing protein synthesis, which, along with intense training and a balanced, protein-rich diet, provides the perfect conditions for muscle gain.

It has long been established that maximum muscle growth is achieved by maintaining an ideal anabolic environment in the body. The challenge was to maintain nitrogen balance and increase protein synthesis without associated side effects. It is for this reason that researchers became so interested in ecdysterone when, in 1963, Dr. Burdett discovered that this substance increases the rate of protein synthesis. This was the beginning of more than 50 studies demonstrating the outstanding effect of ecdysterone on the body in the absence of side effects.

The most famous studies

Ecdysterone has been scientifically researched to improve performance, immune function, lean body mass, and fat burning. Most studies have seen an increase in participants' lean body mass. The best results have been achieved when taking ecdysterone in combination with a diet rich in calories and protein.

Studies conducted back in the USSR in 1988 showed that ecdysterone contributes to "increasing protein synthesis in the liver and achieving a positive nitrogen balance." The more nitrogen in the body, the higher the rate of protein synthesis, the more weight gain.

V. Smetanin, a researcher at the Smolensk State Medical Academy in Russia, suggests that ecdysterone reduces the concentration of urea in the body and increases the level of hemoglobin. This is due to increased erythropoiesis. Erythropoiesis is the formation of mature red blood cells. This leads to stimulation of anabolic processes.

Increased lean muscle mass while reducing fat.

The most cited scientific study on ecdysterone was published in the Scientific Sports Bulletin in 1988. The author of the study is S. Simakin. The purpose of Simakin's famous study was to determine the effect of ecdysterone on muscle and fat mass while studying hormonal changes in volunteers (78 athletes).

Three control factors were used in this study: placebo, protein, and ecdysterone plus protein. The results spoke in favor of the third option. Those who consumed only protein saw only a slight increase in muscle mass over 10 days. Placebo participants experienced little loss of lean muscle mass. In people taking protein in combination with ecdysterone, there was a 6-7% increase in lean muscle mass with an approximately 10% reduction in fat! At the same time, safety studies were carried out, which showed no changes in the hormonal balance of the subjects.

Increased stamina, stamina and energy.

In 1986, ecdysterone underwent another study. In the course of this work, work capacity, body weight, lung capacity and maximum oxygen consumption were studied in professional speed skaters. The results speak for themselves: when taking ecdysterone, there was an improvement in all of these parameters. More oxygen was supplied to the muscle cells of the athletes. This provided a reduction in the recovery period and increased the effectiveness of training.
Impressive results were obtained in the course of a study by B.G. Fadeev, conducted in Russia with the participation of 112 athletes. However, by this time, such results were no longer perceived as something surprising. In 89% of people taking ecdysterone, there was less fatigue, higher working capacity, greater motivation, speed and strength indicators. After what time did the positive dynamics of these effects manifest itself? In months? weeks? No, after 5 days. There were no side effects observed.

How to use? What are the dosage limits?

As you already know, in the course of scientific studies, no negative side effects and hormonal disorders have been identified. In addition, the low level of toxicity of the drug was confirmed. During the research ICN Biochemicals on December 31, 1998, a full set of tests were performed to determine the toxicity threshold. As a result, the researchers nevertheless determined the doses of ecdysterone, at which it begins to have a toxic effect on the body - 6.4 grams per 1 kg of weight. A person weighing 70 kg will have to take 448 g of the drug at a time. This is thousands of times higher than the recommended dose! Moreover, testing of the endocrine system showed that ecdysterone does not have any effect on the hormonal system of mammals. For this, testosterone, cortisol, insulin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, growth hormone and luteinizing hormone were measured. Hormone levels have not gone beyond normal limits.

The recommended dose of ecdysterone is 80-120 mg per day. Should be taken before meals. Permissible dose: 400-800 mg per day. Remember that for optimal results, ecdysterone should be taken in combination with a protein-rich food!

Ecdysterone: non-standard, effective, safe!

Made by order of Stark Pharm

The modern sports nutrition market offers many supplements for muscle building and active longevity. It is fundamentally important for each athlete to find the optimal personal balance of performance, the risk of side effects and the cost of the pharmaceutical support used. In this regard, ecdysterone, a natural hormone-like steroid, stands out especially favorably. According to the results of the work of German and Italian scientists [1], ecdysterone turned out to be more effective than the well-known and long-used drugs methandienone, trenbolone and SARM S1. The study was conducted on rats for 3 weeks, the dosage of all substances was the same and amounted to 5 mg per 1 kg of body weight.

At the same time, as of March 2018, no pronounced negative side effects have been described.

Over the past 10-15 years, the following key facts about ecdysterone have been highlighted in English-language professional scientific journals:

  • anabolic, allows you to quickly build muscle;
  • prevents loss of muscle mass;
  • safe for men and women;
  • speeds up recovery;
  • anti-inflammatory factor;
  • effective neuroprotector;
  • antioxidant;
  • has a positive effect on the metabolism of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, including antidiabetic activity [2].

Ecdysterone was originally discovered as a molting hormone in the silkworm and other arthropods. It turned out that in nature there is a whole group of substances with a similar structure, they were combined into the category of ecdysteroids. In modern sports supplements, ecdysteroids of plant origin are used, in particular the extract of leuzea safflower-like.

Ecdysterone and muscles

Consider the anabolic action of ecdysterone. The results of a joint study by German and Chinese scientists [3] are very indicative. Thus, the use of ecdysterone for 21 days caused an increase in the size of muscle fibers by almost 2 times, mainly of type 2b, although an effect on type 2a was also noted. Muscle fibers 2b have the maximum strength, they are the main fibers in bodybuilding and a number of other sports. Classical sports steroids affect mainly type 1 fibers, which is not so effective [4]. In the same work, an increase in the level of insulin-like growth factor (anabolic), a decrease in the levels of estradiol and corticosterone was noted. Corticosterone is an inducer of catabolic processes in skeletal muscles. No differences were found in testosterone levels, nor was there any evidence of male feminization.

Ecdysterone is capable of selectively activating beta-type estrogen receptors, which are also involved in the regulation of muscle growth in both men and women. Attention! The activation of estrogen receptors and the action of the hormone estrogen are not the same thing. Ecdysterone is safe for both sexes.

Another work describes the same molecular mechanisms of action of ecdysterone - an increase in the level of calcium inside the cell, activation of the protein kinase B cascade, resulting in a persistent increase in protein biosynthesis [5].

Ecdysterone affects many metabolic pathways and signaling cascades. Another animal study demonstrated an increase in physical performance in rats by up to 20% even without training and described a new mechanism - through the cascade of the regulatory protein phosphoinositide-3-kinase [6].

The preservation and growth rate of muscle mass is affected by 2 main processes: the synthesis and destruction of muscle protein. In general terms, the system of protein degradation in a cell is quite simple - first, a "mark of death" is attached to the protein, another protein is ubiquitin, and after that the formed protein complex enters a special structure - the proteasome, where the actual destruction occurs. American scientists have shown that ecdysterone can significantly suppress the ubiquitination system of muscle proteins [7]. In addition, the anti-catabolic effect of this substance is due to interaction with the regulatory cascade of protein kinase B (Akt protein). One of the explanations for the anabolic properties was the effect on another regulatory system of the cell - mTOR.

Ecdysterone is considered as a potential treatment for sarcopenia, muscle atrophy that occurs with aging and in some diseases [8].

Thus, ecdysterone has a complex effect on muscles, providing both an increase in the processes of synthesis of new proteins and the preservation of existing ones.

Ecdysterone and other aspects of sports

Typical companions of sports are injuries of varying severity, among which microtraumas are especially common. Ecdysterone is able to influence regeneration in general, including wound healing. Ecdysterone interacts with the epidermal growth factor receptor and triggers cellular signaling cascades that increase NO synthase activity. This protein synthesizes one of the main substances of the cells of the walls of blood vessels - NO, also known as nitric oxide. NO, in turn, stimulates vascular growth (angiogenesis), regulates vascular tone, and takes part in immune responses. All of these processes are critical to healing. In the work of 2016 [9], it was noted that, ultimately, ecdysterone increased the division, growth, and migration of connective tissue cells (fibroblasts).

Another difficulty in the framework of sports activities should be recognized as unwanted inflammation. For athletes in this aspect, joint problems, for example, osteoarthritis, are especially relevant. In the work of 2014, it was demonstrated that the use of ecdysterone caused a decrease in the cell death of chondrocytes (cartilage tissue cells) and a decrease in inflammation in general [10]. At the same time, ecdysterone influenced many regulatory systems of the cell, including caspase 3, metalloproteinases, cyclooxygenases, nuclear factor kB, etc. All of these factors are strongly associated with inflammation and cell death.

Ecdysterone and aging

The positive effects of ecdysterone are manifested not only in the sports field. Over the past 5-6 years, the neuroprotective (protective) properties of this substance have also been actively studied. The health of the nervous system, especially the brain, is considered as one of the most important factors in ensuring high-quality active longevity in modern conditions.

In the process of aging, there is a gradual deterioration in functional activity and the death of nerve cells, which ultimately leads to multiple serious mental disorders. In addition, the number of patients with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc. is increasing all over the world. The World Health Organization recognizes the problem of neurodegeneration as one of the key public health priorities of the 21st century.

The above disorders of the nervous system have an important common feature - the symptoms begin to appear only when many (in some cases up to 80%) neurons have already succumbed to degeneration. These destructive processes can begin at a young age and last for years. That is why the search for protective substances is so relevant.

The use of ecdysterone for only 7 days provided a significant improvement in the functional state of nerve cells even after a stroke (acute cerebrovascular accident) in laboratory animals [11]. Accelerated recovery of neurons, growth of microcapillaries, and activation of astrocytes were observed. Astrocytes are the second most important brain cells (after the actual neurons), in humans they make up about 40% of the total number of cells of the central nervous system. It is astrocytes that are responsible for the nutrition, protection, support and repair of neurons. Ecdysterone stimulated the synthesis and release of neurotrophic substances, which ultimately affected the survival and regeneration of neurons, as well as the formation of connections (synapses) between them.

Another study demonstrated the decisive role of the use of ecdysterone in the restoration of cognitive functions and the positive effect of this substance on the processes of thinking and memory [12]. Another mechanism of action has been identified: participation in the deactivation of the previously mentioned caspase 3, one of the most important proteins of the signaling pathways for triggering cell death (apoptosis). As a result, in the group taking ecdysterone, the number of dead neurons turned out to be several times less, which ensured the best test results.

One of the newest works [13] describes the effect of ecdysterone on another key factor - mTOR, an important regulator of cell growth and division. The scientists were able to significantly suppress the toxic glutamate cascades. It is these processes that are associated both with normal aging of the central nervous system and with many neurodegenerative diseases. Thus, ecdysterone-induced prevention of the loss of hippocampal cells, one of the most important brain structures involved in memory formation, was observed.

Ecdysterone also affects other organs and systems. One of the universal mechanisms of aging has long been recognized as oxidative stress - multiple cell damage as a result of the destructive action of reactive oxygen species, including free radicals and peroxides. The main cellular structures in these processes are mitochondria, cell organelles where the processes of ATP synthesis, the "energy currency" of the cell, take place. Scientists have found significant changes for the better in the protein profile of mitochondria after exposure to ecdysterone [14]. In this case, ecdysterone is an antioxidant. The work itself dealt with oxidative damage in the cells of the lens of the human eye. The accumulation of such damage is responsible for the development of another age-related disease - cataracts (clouding of the lens) and subsequent blindness.

Ecdysterone and carbohydrate metabolism

Of great importance for health in general is carbohydrate metabolism. Ecdysterone reduces blood glucose levels and does not affect insulin secretion [15], thus exhibiting antidiabetic activity. Moreover, the substance prevents the development of insulin resistance, a metabolic disorder associated with many disorders, including type 2 diabetes.

The detailed mechanisms of this phenomenon were deciphered in 2017. Ecdysterone acts on the IRS-1/AKT/GLUT4 and IRS-1/AKT/GLUT2 signaling cascades, which are associated with glucose transport proteins. Already after 4 weeks of regular use of ecdysterone, there was a decrease in body weight, hyperglycemia and insulin levels, as well as an improvement in lipid metabolism in the blood serum and liver [16].

Conclusion

Summing up, ecdysterone should be considered as a high-quality, safe way to build muscle mass and a worthwhile supplement for pleasant active longevity.

According to the World Anti-Doping Agency, as of March 2018, ecdysterone is a legal substance [17], which means it can be used by professional athletes to prepare for various competitions.

Since ecdysterone is a serious anabolic and provides significant benefits, in recent years there have been discussions about the inclusion of this substance in the list of prohibited additives [1].
