Puritan's Pride - 5-HTP L-5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan contains 5-hydroxytryptophan, derived from an extract of the African Griffonia plant.

5-Hydroxytryptophan ( 5-HTP ) is an aromatic amino acid naturally produced by the body from the exogenous (essential) amino acid L-tryptophan, which helps increase brain serotonin production.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HTP) is one of the three major monoamine neurotransmitters, next to dopamine and norepinephrine. The body is made up of one of the exogenous amino acids L-tryptophan. In the central nervous system, serotonin is involved in the regulation of sleep, depression, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behavior, and pain. 5-HTP is an intermediate metabolite of L-tryptophan in the production of serotonin. The therapeutic use of 5-HTP bypasses the conversion of L-tryptophan to 5-hydroxy-tryptophan by the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is the rate-limiting activity in serotonin synthesis. Tryptophanhydrase can be inhibited by many factors: stress, insulin resistance, vitamin B6 deficiency, and magnesium deficiency.
